The Volkswagen Caddy 2020 is the all-new fourth-generation version of VW’s light commercial van. Designated the Caddy C5 (VW class the 2015 update as a new model), the 2020 is based on the new MQB platform (Modular Transverse Matrix) and will also form the basis of the new Ford Transit Connect – due in 2021.
While the ‘Caddy’ nameplate dates back to 1978, the early iteration was a small pickup truck and the first Caddy van only arrived in 1995. The third-generation arrived in 2003 and, despite facelifts in 2010 and 2015, the model remained relatively unchanged – structurally – for 17 years. Since 1978, over 3m Caddys have been registered globally.
Volkswagen is keen to stress that the 2020 VW Caddy is ‘100 per cent new, 100 per cent Caddy’. The new Caddy is also likely to form the basis of the new generation Ford Transit Connect as the two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on the development of commercial vehicles.
The designers have placed a lot of attention creating a more sporty and sleek appearance, and this has been emphasised by a more sloping roofline, a narrower radiator grille, enhanced ‘flow lines’ and vertically arranged, slim ‘H7’ LED lights. Practical elements include the larger side panels for signwriting and the larger rear windows for better visibility.
The striking new interior includes an electronic handbrake as standard across the range to free up space and a choice of 6.5, 8.25 or a 10-inch touchscreen display. The new ‘digital cockpit’ uses a lot of voice controls and touch-buttons like on smartphones to control everything from climate control and heated seats. In addition, the Caddy can always be online thanks to an E-Sim and We Connect and We Connect Plus.
VW Caddy 2020 payload and dimensions
As with the current generation, Volkswagen will offer a short and long wheelbase derivative (called the Caddy Maxi) and they will offer load volumes of around 3.3 and 4.0 cubic metres (previously 3.2 and 4.2 cubic metres). What we can say for definite is that the new Caddy is longer, shorter in height (although internal load height has increased) and wider.

Rear door width and width between the wheelarches have also increased so that Maxi versions can now carry two Euro Pallets.
Due to all the extra equipment to reduce emissions and increase safety, its likely Volkswagen will follow suit of other manufacturers and use more expensive and lighter materials in the construction of the new Caddy. This will help retain the payload of up to 800kg on the short wheelbase and around 1,000kg on the long wheelbase.
Engine and driveline
As with the current model, there will be the choice between a 2.0-litre diesel (with power outputs of 75, 102 and 122PS) and a 1.0-litre petrol with a power output of 116PS. The revised engines are up to 12% more fuel-efficient than the current engines, while to ‘double-dosing’ AdBlue system reduces NOx levels even further.
2020 Caddy electric
Volkswagen made a U-turn on its decision to launch the current-generation Caddy electric, which has been developed with ABT, in right-hand drive markets.
However, sources at the company have revealed that the new model has been designed to accommodate large lithium-ion batteries underneath the chassis, although the exact spec of these batteries is yet to be announced.
VW has focused a lot of its energy on electric since its emission scandal. Over €30bn (the company’s entire profits between 2015 and 2018) is to be ploughed into electrification by 2023, with 70 new electric vehicle products in the group by 2030. This puts it well ahead of any other European manufacturer and only slightly behind Tesla.
VW Caddy 2020 price and release
The 2020 VW Caddy is expected to come with a modest price hike of around £500, therefore Startline models will be priced from around £17,200 plus VAT and flagship Highline models from around £20,500 plus VAT. The new model will go into production at the factory in Poznan, Poland in around May 2020, with UK presales starting in October 2021 and first deliveries in early 2021.
