The next couple of years are set to be very exciting for the light commercial vehicle industry, with quite a number of new van launches expected for 2018, 2019, 2020 and beyond. The new van launches kicks off in the summer of 2018, with the all new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, followed shortly by the next-generation small vans from PSA (Peugeot, Citroen and Vauxhall).
Citroen Berlingo 2019
The next-generation Citroen Berlingo – due early 2019 – is based on PSA’s all-new EMP2 platform, which has allowed Citroen to integrate more technology into their new small van. The Citroen Berlingo 2018 will be available with either a 1.2-litre petrol or 1.5-litre diesel engine.
Ford Transit 2019
Having been launched in 2014, the Ford Transit is due a mid-life facelift in 2019. According to our source at Ford, the Ford Transit 2019 updates are centred around three areas; aesthetics, technology and weight.
Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2018
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has built up a formidable reputation in its short 20-year lifespan, in terms of safety, comfort and reliability in the large van sector. This year (2018) sees the introduction of the third-generation Sprinter (MKI 1995-2006; MKII 2006-2018), which will be powered by the same 2.1-litre engine as the previous generation.
Mercedes-Benz Vito 2019
Despite only hitting the market in 2014, the third-generation Mercedes-Benz Vito has quickly passed its sell-by-date. In a recent group test (read more on Vito v Transit Custom v Transporter), the Vito was bottom of the pile and sharply criticised for its ride and handling, uninspiring dashboard design and outdated technology. An update is scheduled for late 2019/early 2020.
Nissan NV250 2020
The Nissan NV250 is the upcoming small panel van from Nissan, built at Renault’s Maubeuge factory and based on the Renault Kangoo platform. Replacing the NV200, the Nissan NV250 is powered by the same 1.5-litre diesel and will offer payloads up to around 850kg.
Peugeot Partner 2019
The new Peugeot Partner will be hitting UK dealerships in arly 2019, along with its Citroen and Vauxhall-badged siblings. The Peugeot Partner 2019 will also be based on the EMP2 platform, and available in either a short or long wheelbase.
Renault Kangoo 2020
Introduced in 2008, the Renault Kangoo will be the oldest van on the market when it comes time to being replaced in 2020. Very little is known about the Renault Kangoo 2020, except that it will feature a range of new petrol and diesel engines and share the same chassis as the Mercedes-Benz Citan and, for a while, the Nissan NV200.
Toyota Proace City
The Toyota Proace City is the upcoming small panel van from Toyota, which is due to hit UK dealerships in the spring of 2020. Based on the Peugeot Partner and Citroen Berlingo, the Toyota Proace City is available in two wheelbases and payloads.
Vauxhall Combo 2019
The big news regarding the Vauxhall Combo 2019 is that, for the first time, it will be built by Peugeot. The current generation Combo is built by Fiat, but after PSA’s (the parent company of Peugeot and Citroen) purchase of Vauxhall in 2017, it was decided the Vauxhall Combo 2019 will share the same architecture as the new Citroen Berlingo and Peugeot Partner.
Vauxhall Vivaro 2019
As with the smaller Combo, the Vauxhall Vivaro 2019 will also become a badge engineered version of a Peugeot van. The Vivaro factory in Luton is currently being retooled to manufacture the new van, which is expected to be launched in the second quarter of 2019.
Volkswagen Transporter T6.1 2020
After plenty of spy shots, pictures of the Volkswagen Transporter T6 2020 have finally emerged. The Volkswagen Transporter 2020, or T6.1, upgrade isn’t exactly extensive; virtually nothing has changed structurally, and the alterations mainly consist of a new grille, front bumper, dashboard layout and the introduction of new technology.
