The Ford Transit Connect 2022 the upcoming third-generation model of Ford’s small panel van, due for release in 2022. Developed by Volkswagen and based on the Caddy C5, the new Transit Connect will be packed with more technology and safety systems.
The ‘Connect’ was initially launched back in 2002 and was one of the first dedicated small panel vans. Prior to this, Ford’s small vans were car-derived and included the popular Ford Courier and Escort Van.
Built by Ford Otosan in Turkey, the first-generation Transit Connect was a huge success for Ford – despite the poor fuel economy – and it became the first van the company had sold in both North America and Europe.
In 2014, the second-generation – and current – model was launched and production shifted to Valencia in Spain. Based on the Ford S-Max platform, the new model was far more streamlined and – thanks to its passenger car underpinnings – its ride and handling were drastically improved.
Ford Transit Connect 2022 development
Ford announced in 2018 that it could no longer develop light commercial vehicles independently and that it would partner with Volkswagen on future models. Due to the popularity and global success of the VW Caddy, it was decided that VW would lead the development for small vans – the Caddy and Transit Connect – and it is likely to build both models at its factory in Poznan, Poland.
What we know so far
The next-generation Transit Connect will be based on the VW Caddy C5, which was unveiled in February 2020 in Dusseldorf. While pretty much all the exterior panels and interior will be different to give the Connect a truly ‘Ford’ look and feel, the load area, dimensions and weights will be fairly similar.
Therefore, we can say with almost certainty that the new Connect will have two load volumes (3.3 and 4.0 cubic metres), up to a 1t payload and up to two Euro Pallets on long wheelbase models. The Transit Connect will go into production in around 2022 with the first deliveries expected in the latter half of the year.
